COURSES IN LEGAL ENGLISH – 2014/15 IN PREPARATION FOR CERTIFICATE OF COMPETENCE IN LEGAL ENGLISH (CCLE)
In cooperation with The Knightswood Trust (an educational charity based in Scotland, UK), the Faculty of Law is pleased to be able to offer its students the opportunity to complete a course of study in legal English at the appropriate level during 2014/15. Eligible students will be tested in April 2015 and if the required standard of competence is achieved, a Certificate of Competence in Legal English (CCLE), awarded jointly by The Knightswood Trust and Taras Shevchenko National University of Kyiv, will be issued.
Students assessed as having intermediate level competence in English will be invited to participate in the CCLE intermediate level course which will comprise weekly lessons in legal English by video conference starting on and from Thursday 2nd October 2014 from 15:00 – 15:55.
The CCLE upper-intermediate / advanced level course, which will comprise weekly lessons in legal English by video conference starting on and from Thursday, 2nd October 2014 from 16:00 – 16:55, will be offered to students who are assessed as having upper-intermediate / advanced level competence in English.
Lessons will not be held during university holiday periods.
Both courses will be taught by The Knightswood Trust’s Director of ESOL Studies, Mr David Stobbs.
Students who submit an application are required to complete assessment exercises and a short written piece in English, so as to determine their current level of competence in the language. The deposit of 200 UAH should be given on the very day of assessment test. The maximum score possible is 25. When and where this process will take place will be informed in advance, see advertisements on university site.
Students achieving a score of 12 or less will not be eligible to register for a course.
Students achieving a score of 13 – 17 will be offered a place on the intermediate level course and will need to register for it and pay the appropriate balance (see below) by 2nd October 2014 in default of which their deposit would not be refunded unless the course is cancelled due to insufficient students registering for it.
Students achieving a score of 18 – 25 will be eligible for a place on the upper-intermediate / advanced level course and will need to register for it (or, if they prefer, the intermediate level course) and pay the appropriate balance (see below) by 2nd October 2014 in default of which their deposit would not be refunded unless the chosen course is cancelled due to insufficient students registering for it.
Each course offered will only go ahead if at least 15 students register for it. The maximum number of places offered on each course is 24.
The following terms and conditions must be met by students registering for a course:
- The student undertakes to achieve an attendance record of at least 70% of the lessons conducted by video conference by Mr Stobbs. Unless granted exemption in particular circumstances by Mr Stobbs, the student must be present throughout each lesson to qualify for an attendance credit. If a student fails to achieve a 70% attendance record, he / she will be ineligible to sit the appropriate CCLE exam.
- In addition to completing the course material presented at each lesson, the student undertakes to study lexis on a weekly basis, using the guidance notes and vocabulary record sheets to be issued by Mr Stobbs. This will necessitate each student obtaining a copy of the Oxford Advanced Learner’s Dictionary (8th Edition) which is included in the course fee (see below). No alternative edition or version of a dictionary is acceptable
- Eligible students undertake to comply with the timetable and rules for CCLE examinations to be conducted at the university in April 2015. The CCLE is awarded at the appropriate level, having regard to examination results:
INTERMEDIATE (Pass / Pass with Merit / Pass with Distinction)
UPPER-INTERMEDIATE (Pass / Pass with Merit / Pass with Distinction)
ADVANCED (Pass / Pass with Merit / Pass with Distinction)
4. Students must pay the balance of the course fee of 530 UAH before registration for a course can be confirmed. This includesthe cost of the Oxford Advanced Learner’s Dictionary (OALD) and the CCLE exam fee. No part of the course fee will be refunded, even if the student withdraws from a course or fails to meet theminimum attendance requirement for eligibility to sit the CCLE exam. A student who can show Olga Volodymyrivna a copy of the 8th Edition of the OALD with his / her name written in ink on its inside front cover will be required to pay a balance of only 100 UAH at the time of registration.
Your completed form, including passport sized photograph, should be either handed to Olga Volodymyrivna Kunytsya in R.257 starting from 1st September but not later than 23rd September 2014 . If you send your application form per e-mail, it should be scanned in a proper way, the deadline for the deposit remains the same, i.e. 23rd September.
